Antananarivo, which is also referred to as “the city of the thousand” is the town from where the first king of Madagascar started to unite all the smaller kingdoms found on the the island.
In Antananarivo you can find busting markets, very friendly locals and an old-town with historic churches and royal palaces. This colourful city is always full of life, teeming with people, cars and tightly packed markets stalls selling everything from fruit, and freshly slaughtered chickens to mobile phones.
In a city that oozes history, we heartily recommend visiting the Royal Palace. This incredible building-complex was home to the rulers of the country during the 17th - 19th centuries. We also warmly recommend a visit to the UNESCO world heritage site Ambohimanga- a royal palace built on the top of a rocky hill.
