Montagne d´Ambre National Park

Close to the north tip of Madagascar, and only 30km from the town and airport of Diego Suarez, you can find  the national park of Montagne d’Ambre. This national park, which was created back in 1958 and covers an area of 185km2, protects an area of volcanic mountains, between 800 to nearly 1,500m in height, and covered in areas of rainforest.

In the park, which is surrounded by drier lowlands, you can find many streams, waterfalls and volcanic lakes. The level of biodiversity here is very high, with around 1,000 planet species divided between different belts of vegetation including mountain rainforest, low-altitude rainforest, dry deciduous forests on the parks lower borders.

The fauna of the park is also rich and includes a total of 25 species of mammal, such as mongoose, fossa and eight species of lemur, including Sandford’s brown lemur, crowned lemur, lesser bamboo lemur and five species of nocturnal lemurs. Around 75 species of bird have been recorded in the park, 60 species of reptile including the tiny stump-tailed chameleon, as well as 35 species of frog, 40 species of butterfly and much more.

The park attracts many visitors and there are many well-marked paths, which is why it is one of the few parks in the country that you can walk in without a guide.
